My Husband is My Tenth Cousin
One of the coolest features of the paid version of the RootsMagic software is their Relationship Calculator. We use it all the time!
Include Your Relationship to an Ancestor When You Can Online
For example, when I post “virtual” flowers on our ancestors memorial pages at FindAGrave.com, I do my best to list the relationship of the person to either myself or my husband. I do this so that others can see our relationship. (This helps others contact me with more information or questions on some of our ancestors.)
How Close in Relation are You to Your Spouse and In-Laws?
Today, I was calculating the relationship for a couple of Jonathan’s ancestors so I could add it to their flowers on FindAGrave. Our two oldest boys were sitting by me and using the Relationship Calculator to see the relationships between different people.
So I selected myself and Jonathan, “just for laughs,” to see if Jonathan and I were related to each other . . .
So get this:
My Husband is My Tenth Cousin!
We are tenth cousins with Robert Goodell and Catharine Killam as our common ancestors. The second relation is we are cousins twice removed with Joseph Morse and Hester Pierce as our common ancestors. Relation number three is cousins twice removed a second time with common ancestors being Edward Garfield and Rebecca Johnson. Our fourth relation is eleventh cousins twice removed with common ancestors being John Pierce and Elizabeth.
Researching for One Line Instead of Two
Now when we do research on one of these lines, we are helping each other’s family. Well, it is OUR family. I love when our lines connect so we reduce the amount of research needed because we share lines.
Please share in the comments below if you have any fun relations between you and other family members or friends.
